Foundations of Learning Program
What is the Foundations of Learning Program?
Students in this program generally range in age from 6 to 18 years old and have needs predominantly in social-communication development and academics.
Program description
The goal of this program is to develop students’ ability to learn in a less restrictive environment. Therefore, students are taught how to learn from peers (i.e., observational learning) and how to work cooperatively with peers. Both of these skills are necessary to learn in a small group and are characteristic of instruction in typical classrooms or resource rooms in schools. In addition, core academic skills are taught so that the students can benefit from more natural instructional techniques.
Each student’s individualized strengths and needs are identified across multiple areas including social, language/communication, academics, and adaptive/life skills. Educational goals are then identified based on the student’s strengths and needs. Each goal includes multiple learning objectives, which are used to created the student’s individualized program. Objectives are targeted daily and student’s progress on the objectives is assessed regularly.
