The Community Connections Summer Program
What is the Community Connections Summer Program?
The Community Connections Summer Program offers community based activities and therapeutic recreation throughout the summer. This program is for school-aged children from 6 to 18 years old. The primary goal is to provide opportunities for children to develop and practice social, communication, and independent living skills through a variety of fun activities including community outings, art and music therapy, and recreational games. Regardless of all abilities, all children will participate.
Program Description

This program focuses on increasing children’s access to the community. The program and each of its component activities have goals and objectives. Structured weekly events may include bowling, swimming, horseback riding, gymnastics, art and music therapy, vocational opportunities and field trips to local places of interest. We have partnered with local organizations and professionals to foster relationships between our children and the community.
Knowing that autism spectrum disorders affect the entire family, one of the goals of this program is to provide opportunities for siblings and other family members to be involved. When possible we will have a “sibling” day where siblings can join the program for an outing or a structured, collaborative project at the Alta Vista Center.
We use a multidisciplinary approach to our treatment and receive ongoing consultation from a speech/language pathologist and behavior specialist. The principles of applied behavior analysis are utilized to teach the children target behaviors. Social skills are addressed through our outings and activities in small groups. Lunch time activities are prompted and reinforced while appropriate meal behaviors are encouraged and taught.
Schedule
The Community Connections 2009 summer program runs June 5 through August 1st. See below for a detailed description of the program and pricing.
