Tyler’s Story
Tyler also benefited from being with other children. We were now able to incorporate social skills into his program. The Alta Vista Center also helped prepare him for kindergarten. At age 5, he attended kindergarten in the morning and Alta Vista Center in the afternoon. They supported his school efforts by breaking down skills into smaller, more manageable pieces, while positively reinforcing his efforts. They also met with staff at his school to provide insight as how best to support him. He would not have been able to transition to kindergarten without the support of the Alta Vista Center. Tyler is now in 2nd grade. While he has a para-professional to keep him on track, he is fully mainstreamed into a typical classroom. He is able to handle transitions well, and is reading at grade level. He also has become much more independent. A few years ago, we had difficulty getting him out of the car and into any classroom. He would run if given the chance. He now has gained so much confidence that we can drop him off at the curb at school, and he rides the bus home by himself. We are so proud of him now, and we are grateful to the Alta Vista Center for their part in his growth and development.

Tyler was diagnosed with autism at age 3. We immediately implemented a home program of behavioral therapy, and continued speech and occupational therapy. Although we tried to maintain consistency, each therapist had their own approach and it was difficult to find and train qualified people. When the Alta Vista Center opened (then known as the Aspen Center), we were able to consolidate all of his therapies into one place. Not only was it logistically easier, because he had trouble with transitions, but the speech therapist and occupational therapist consulted with his teachers so that he received an integrated and consistent approach.
